ABOUT THE PROJECT

‍

Giraffe thoughtfully restored this midcentury home, originally designed in 1971 by Ann Arbor architect David Osler. This year-long restoration and renovation project modernized the home while preserving the architectural details of Osler’s design and contributing to the ongoing stewardship of Ann Arbor’s legacy of regional modernism. Much of the original layout, casework, interior doors, tile, and trim were preserved, maintaining the character and authenticity of the house. Select plan modifications were introduced to better support the needs of the current homeowners.

The restoration/renovation included:

• The combination of two bedrooms to form a new primary suite
• Reconfigured primary bathroom, part of a 1981 addition designed by Osler
• Restructure of the stair to connect the first, second, and third floors
• New exterior windows, skylights, doors, and insulation
• Restored pickled Douglas fir cabinetry with new custom cabinetry fabricated to match
• Refinished flooring
• New finishes and fixtures, including appliances, lighting, and plumbing
• Modernized landscaping by Lotus Gardenscapes
